Straight answers about Haven and the Resilience Roadmap.
Getting started
What is Haven?
Haven is a home-resilience advisory firm in Boulder, Colorado. We assess how well your home can keep your family safe and comfortable through a power outage, wildfire smoke, or an evacuation threat, then give you a priced plan to close the gaps. Haven was founded by Ryan Kehrl, a mechanical engineer who lives in Newlands.
What is a Resilience Roadmap?
A Resilience Roadmap is a one-day, on-site assessment of your home that becomes a written plan within two weeks. It includes your Resilience and Endurance Scores, a priced and sequenced hardening plan, backup power and water sized from measured use, a photo-documented wildfire assessment for your insurer, and a 3D digital twin of the property.
How much does a Resilience Roadmap cost?
A Resilience Roadmap costs $5,000. That covers a 30-minute video call, a full day on site with metering and a LiDAR scan, the written Roadmap delivered within two weeks, and a follow-up conversation to walk through it.
How long does a Resilience Roadmap take?
About two weeks from site visit to finished Roadmap. It starts with a 30-minute video call, then one full day on site, then the written Roadmap and a conversation to walk you through it.
How disruptive is the site visit? Do I need to be home?
Not very, and not all day. We meet at the start to walk the property and at the end to share first impressions. In between, we need access to the electrical panel, mechanical and utility spaces, attic or crawlspace, and the outside of the house. Most households go about their day while we work.
What area does Haven serve?
Haven currently works with homeowners in Boulder, Colorado.
Power outages & Xcel
What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)?
A Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) is when Xcel Energy deliberately turns off power to an area during extreme fire weather so its lines can’t start a wildfire. Xcel used PSPS across the Front Range, including Boulder, in December 2025, cutting power to tens of thousands of customers.
Why does Xcel turn off my power?
To prevent its equipment from starting a fire. In high winds, power lines can contact trees or each other and throw sparks into dry vegetation. Xcel decides when to shut off based on wind speed, humidity, and fuel moisture, plus fire-spread modeling. Power stays off until the weather passes and crews inspect the lines, which can take hours or days.
Will Xcel’s power shutoffs stop soon?
No. Xcel’s 2025–2027 Wildfire Mitigation Plan, approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission, totals about $1.9 billion, but only a small share goes to undergrounding, roughly 50 miles of line. Most of it funds inspections, vegetation work, devices that split the grid into smaller sections, weather stations, cameras, and operations that help Xcel run shutoffs more precisely. The plan is built to make shutoffs smaller and better targeted, not to end them. Plan for them, including in winter.
Will my solar panels work during a power outage?
Probably not, unless you have a battery. Most rooftop solar systems are grid-tied and shut off automatically when the grid goes down, to protect line workers. To use solar during an outage, you need a battery with a backup-capable inverter, or an inverter designed to supply limited power on its own. Your Roadmap checks what your system can do and what it would take to change that.
Can I use my electric vehicle to power my house?
Some EVs can. With the right bidirectional charger and transfer equipment, vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, some GM EVs, and the Tesla Cybertruck can back up a home. Most other EVs can’t power a house, though many can run a few appliances from a built-in outlet. Haven checks whether your vehicle, charger, and electrical panel can be set up to do it safely.
How big a generator or home battery do I need?
It depends on how your household actually uses power, which is why we measure it. During the site visit we put meters on your actual circuits and log use through the day. Your Roadmap then sizes backup power to run what your family needs, not just the lights.
Insurance & rebates
Can a Resilience Roadmap help with my homeowners insurance in Colorado?
It can give you the evidence you need. Colorado’s HB25-1182 requires insurers that use wildfire risk models to disclose how your home is scored, consider documented mitigation, and offer an appeal. Your Roadmap includes a photo-documented wildfire assessment scored to IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home criteria. We can’t promise a lower premium, but you’ll have a file ready to send.
Can Haven help me get rebates and incentives?
Yes. Haven identifies every rebate, tax credit, and incentive your home qualifies for, across federal, state, county, city, and utility programs, and helps you apply. In Boulder that includes Xcel Energy rebates for home batteries and heat pumps, Colorado’s heat pump tax credit, the City of Boulder’s Wildfire Resilience Assistance Program (WRAP), and Boulder County’s Wildfire Partners rebate. Many of these can be combined on the same project, and your Roadmap sequences the work so you capture as many as possible.
How we work
Is Haven an owner’s rep or a general contractor?
An owner’s rep. A general contractor builds your project and earns money on the work. An owner’s rep works only for you: defining what should be built, getting comparable bids, coordinating the builders and trades, and checking the work against the plan. Hospitals, water utilities, and other owners of critical infrastructure rely on this model because the person checking the work shouldn’t be the person paid to do it. Haven brings the same model to your home.
Do I have to hire Haven to do the work?
No. The Roadmap is yours to build with any builder in Boulder. If you want help, Haven can plan, coordinate, and check the work with established local builders and trades, but there is no obligation to continue.
Do you sell generators, batteries, roofing, or tree work?
No. Haven is independent. We don’t sell equipment or construction services, and we don’t mark up the trades. Our recommendations are based on what your house needs, not on what we sell.
Privacy & security
How does Haven protect my privacy?
Discretion is part of the job. Your Roadmap, photos, measurements, and 3D scan are shared only with you and the people you approve, and are stored with providers that maintain SOC 2 compliance. Nothing about your home is used in marketing or case studies without your written permission.
Does Haven help with home security?
Yes. For clients who want it, physical security and planning for periods of civil unrest are part of the conversation. We discuss those details in person, not on the web.
